Photo Story Friday and Time and Temperature

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

Temperatures are dipping around here. A few times in the last week or so, the smell of someone's wood burning stove has mingled with the scent of damp leaves and cold night air on our street. I love almost everything about this time of year.

It means traditions and stories and anticipation. It means family and good food and good will. It means Christmas is just around the corner.

And it means piles of soggy winter outerwear have started to get dumped just inside the door around 3:30 pm.

Even Evie is getting in on the action.

It's funny. I could swear it was just last year that I put that coat in the cedar chest after Gracie's arms got too long.

Sigh. Time does march on.

Oh! I love the smell of winter, too! Great post!

Girl. I feel ya.

You know what sucketh the most? BUCKLING KIDS IN WINTER JACKETS INTO CARSEATS. And then, and only then, they fill their diaper so you can repeat.

BLECH.

I love that Evie in that hip, cute coat!

Tiaras and Tantrums said...

And so it does my friend . . a bit too fast for my liking!

lisaschaos said...

Oops I messed up and entered June into your linky thing - can you fix it? Sorry!

lisaschaos said...

Evie is so cute pushing the water around. :) I do hate all the wet clothes the winter brings but I love the joy children have getting them wet. :)

Trannyhead said...

I just hope my future offspring are also male ... because I have so much boy stuff that's in really good shape since my kid outgrew it so quickly. *sending uterus male vibes*

Yes, yes, yes - I get it. And I don't like it. Three kids four and under, three snow suits, three wet pairs of crap on the floor inside my front door. Or wet boots kicked all over the house. Most days I'm ready for a glass of wine at 5:30 lately ;-)

But that shot is adorable - I just love it. Makes the wet outerwear worth it!!!

Time does really fly fast. I was just beginning to enjoy the fall colors... it is going to be all white very soon. :)

So precious! Beautiful post Cecily.

Yup...time's zipping by. I think it goes faster each year...it's my bathtub drain theory: the less water there is in the tub the faster it goes down the drain. Same thing for life, no? Thanks for stopping by.

Honey Mommy said...

It's been a bit rainy and squooshy here too. We were out in the rain just the other day... I'll have to post the photos next week!

Robyn said...

I love the smell of wood burning. It is the smell of winter. It does go fast I though I bought boots big enough to last 2 yrs, nope.

david mcmahon said...

We've been in a three-day heatwave while you get colder!

Becky said...

I, too, just LOVE the smells of autumn and those first whiffs of homefires burning.

Where does the time go? You blink, and they're in Kindergarten, then their graduation caps...then married and we're the old ones.

Sigh. Life IS but a vapor, that's for sure.

I love Christmas, but I'm always torn at this time of year between holding on to the beauty of fall, and embracing the celebration of the holidays.
The up and down weather we're having around here lately, isn't helping me make up my mind either.
That pink coat screams out for my girls.

Here in Texas, we don't have that problem yet. We're still in short sleeves.

That is an adorable shot!

ooooh my heart!! she is such total cuteness!

I am SO sad! Fall is my fav!! Thanksgiving is actually my favorite holiday!

Kelli @ Gohn Crazy said...

That is one of my absolute favorite smells. And they do grow so quickly. I have memories this week as well. :) Tis the season.

Melissa said...

They are growing up WAY to fast...while the weather gets me down this time of year I love the holiday season. Can't wait to get the tree up this year.

How I laughed when I read MamaGeek's comment about buckeling the carseat with a winter coat! Oh,, how can I relate! Too funny! Yes, I was just looking at my entryway which was nicely organized until this past week, now we have large coats on top of one another... What us mom's put up with! LOL!

Straight to Your Hart said...

Some-days I wish the clothes grew faster than the kids..and then my Sara comes screamin in the house (moment gone-tehe)!!

I do understand the feeling. Time goes way to fast. I also agree on this time of year...it really does invoke the best kinds of feelings!!

Refugee Crafter said...

Your words are exactly what I feel about this time of year. I just love it. Soggy outerwear and all.

Hannah Noel said...

Love this time of year (not so much having to walk to classes in the cold, but... =))

Beautiful picture

Shar said...

I love the smell of winter too! But I don't love the cold.

I love that picture of Evie!

Michelle said...

Love the motion in the picture. I love it when it gets a little colder too. San Diego has been very multi personality with its weather. Three days chilly, four days Santana heat!

DoodleBunz said...

I absolutely agree with Mamageek...

But yeah...that would be our woodstove you're smelling. ;) Thankfully I think it might get warm enough in the morning to let it burn out. YAY!

you are absolutely right. time runs.

My son also love to play outside although in this cold weather.

My PSF entry this week : in HERE. Hope you have time to visit . Thanks

I love this time of year too. :)

I swear winter just ended. How is it here again already?
Lovely photos. :)

It will be a sad day when all the hand-me-downs are too small. I have an end of fall post as well. Fall soccer that is.

The Sports Mama said...

At least it fits Evie.

When Bug decides he needs to start wearing Jock's hand-me-downs, they're always three sizes too big.

Casey's trio said...

That is the one thing that is hard about the cold weather...you can't just hose them off when they get filthy! How fun that you get to see some of Gracie's old clothes on Evie:)

Kacey R. said...

I love this time of year. I just went through the nursery and all of the twinkies clothes. I've waited and waited to do this. Lincoln has gone through most of Ryder's clothes already...its a little sad putting them away. I guess that is the price you pay for all the cuteness they deliver each day. They grow too fast! :o)

Deb - Mom of 3 Girls said...

Oh yes, it certainly does. I can't believe how quickly the years go by nowadays.

Love the pink coat! :)

Maggie May said...

I wonder what your little one is doing? And don't they grow up so fast? Love her pink coat, even if it did belong to Gracie!

imbeingheldhostage said...

so glad you wrote this as a reminder of what a great season it is. I've been an eeyore noticing how dark and cold it is and what that means (insanity on a plate coming right up!). I'll try a different attitude and breathe in the positive. (loved Mama Geeks reminder-- hate buckling coated children)

scrappysue said...

it was 72, sunny and calm today - BLISS. summer's here! on the downside - it hardly ever feels like christmas. that's why we don't really 'feel' halloween either - coz it ain't 'fall'. i never had to deal with handmedowns - being the eldest. she wears it well tho - she wears it well!

Winter? What!?! I was huddled in front of the fire, wrapped in a blanket last night. I think it was all of 60 degrees out. I know. I'm a wimp.

Cecilia said...

I can totally relate...I can believe is winter again!!!!

Time does march on!

Karen said...

I try to block out that soggy winter stuff. It's the thorn in the rosy glow of winter. Thanks for bringing that up.

Susie said...

awww, she is so darling! Yes, growing too quickly is a fact of motherhood I totally didn't believe until I experienced it.

Here comes Santa Claus, here come Santa Claus.
Just thought I shouldn't be the only one singing that song today!

Great PSF! and I'm so glad I made it to the game this week!

Susie said...

Yeah I make no sense whatsoever. Forgive me.

Kelli @ writing the waves said...

I love the colors in this picture. And your writing? Just awesome! I swear I could smell the wood burning. :)

I love when the season changes and all the yummy smells, etc, too. Then I'm over it and want spring back. I'm a winter wuss. But kids love it and that makes it fun!

Momisodes said...

Oh I've been smelling those wood burning stoves around here as well. I love the different scents this season presents, even all of the layers of damp clothing :)

Do you want my winter? I am a summer gal all the way. I hear you guys got SNOW??

Jaime said...

Time indeed marches on. I have been looking at my girls lately, in complete amazement that they are, well, little girls and not babies.

steph said...

Isn't it a great time of year? I love the colors, the cold, the snuggling inside and watching the snow through the window. I love t he picture of your little one in the mud. Those are precious moments. Ahhh, the curiosity.

You have a gift in your use of words and images. Truly talented. I enjoy your blog.

ValleyGirl said...

It really does. And those dang kids never stop growing either! I have the same problem at my house.

Man, I hardly remember "crisp" fall evenings anymore...

tommie said...

we have a tub in the closet of clothes we pass on to cousin E.....

it NEVER ceases to amaze me when something goes in there! NEVER

how can they grow when I am not looking!

I do miss snow, now that we're out here in California. I always love that first snowfall -- up until I have to shovel it! This week's photostory is pretty short. If you have an extra minute, be sure to check out the previous post - it features me and the little one busting a move!

It certainly is that time of year!

Why do they have to grow up so fast.

KATE said...

I love this time of year too, my favorite!
It is funny how fast it goes isn't it? Crazy!

raising4boys said...

There was definitely a chill in the air tonight. I am getting excited for the holiday's and traditions but not for the cold weather.

I will admit, one nice thing about having all boys is passing down the clothes and coats.

Enjoy your weekend :)

Karin said...

Oh, how I know what you mean! Where the heck is the pause button?

Killlashandra said...

Time may march on but that just means there are new stories to tell and share every year. :)

Your post was very descriptive..I could almost smell the smells you were describing! Mmmm...I love this time of the year as well. Christmas music is already drifting throughout the house over here!

Carissa(GoodnCrazy) said...

The cedar chest? Srsly? Old kid's coats go in the chest. Partly that cracks me up. Partly I'm thinking...duh! Best idea I've EVER heard!
